TIFA Council Meeting on “Expanding Private Sector Participation in Central Asian Trade Facilitation and Transportation Infrastructure Development”

On June 17th, 2008 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan a Government to Business Dialogue was held alongside the 2008 U.S.-Central Asia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council Meeting on “Expanding Private Sector Participation in Central Asian Trade Facilitation and Transportation Infrastructure Development”. Dr. Ainura Cholponkulova, Executive Director AmCham, Kyrgyzstan was one of the panelists at the TIFA round table. She familiarized TIFA's participants with recommendations made by Trade Conference's participants on April 25-26, 2008. The US Department of Commerce, the Office of the United States Trade Representative and the Government of Tajikistan were the sponsors of the events.
United States and Central Asian Countries Signed a Regional Trade and Investment Framework Agreement on June 1st, 2004. The TIFA creates a United States-Central Asia Council on Trade and Investment to promote trade and investment between the United States and Central Asia. Robert B.Zoellick, Washington  U.S. Trade Representative noted that “The objective of the TIFA is to increase and diversify trade and investment opportunities between the United States and Central Asia".
Given the fact that AmCham in KR intends to strengthen the bilateral trade relationship with the USA, the TIFA would be is one of the priorities among AmCham activities.
Establishing and enhancing contacts between the U.S. Central Asia Council on Trade& Investment and AmCham's U.S.-Kyrgyz Business Committee will facilitate attracting U.S. businesses to the Kyrgyz market and simultaneously pave the way for Kyrgyz trade manufactured goods to be traded on the U.S. market.
The United States has TIFAs with a number of countries in order to strengthen trade ties and coordinate regionally and multilaterally through regular senior-level discussions on trade and economic issues.
