Conference on “Trade, Transport and Transit in the Kyrgyz Republic: Opportunities and Challenges”.

On April 25-26, 2008 the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) was held a Conference on “Trade, Transport and Transit in the Kyrgyz Republic: Opportunities and Challenges”.
The conference was held in the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Bishkek and was hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in the Kyrgyz Republic with financial support from the Department of Commerce USA.

“Issues of trade, transport and transit are the main priorities of AmCham. The goal of the conference is to discuss trade & transport barriers and problems of transit, and to work out recommendations for solving these problems at state-level”,-said Ainura Cholponkulova, Executive Director AmCham in Kyrgyzstan.

The conference focused on the following topics;
Transport corridors: new prospects of Kyrgyz Republic economic development;
The role of logistics in trade;
International cargo systems development in the Kyrgyz Republic;
Elimination of administrative barriers;
Improving legislative regulation;
Implementation requirements of international agreements;
Current Doha Round Negotiations (Article 5, GATT, 1994).
Heads of governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Foreign affairs, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Transport & Communications, Taxation Committee and Customs Committee were invited to the conference.
 Members of Parliament, representatives of the United States Department of Commerce, partner business associations, donor organizations, and diplomatic missions were also present.

As a result of the conference, AmCham and the participants have made a joint plan of action and policy recommendations to the Government. In addition, AmCham in cooperation with the Association of Carriers of the KR have adopted a decision on establishing the National Forum of Business Associations to address issues of trade, transport and transit.
